I teach an earth science class for 9th graders, and I want to place them in time and space so they will understand the world around them by introducing a strong unit on astronomy.

My kids are really excited about NASA's current satellite missions. All of the measurements are made using some form of light. I want to give them a strong introduction into the nature of light so we can talk about these missions.

To really demonstrate the properties of light and how it can be separated into its various wavelengths, I would like to have a class set of spectrometers. I can set up several experiments using these to show how light can be used to measure temperature and composition of stars.

Your help will give me a set of spectrometers that are good enough to really do the kinds of experiments that will show them the principles that NASA and astronomers use on their missions.
