My Project

I am looking to enhance our school library’s collection of how-to books by providing accompanying materials that will allow our elementary students to engage more deeply with the content. Our goal is to cultivate a love of reading, foster creativity, and encourage hands-on learning through practical experiences.

We believe in the importance of experiential learning.

Our library currently offers a diverse selection of how-to books covering various topics such as cooking, crafting, gardening, science experiments, and more. However, we have identified a significant gap in resources that would allow students to actively engage with these texts. To address this, we propose the creation of a “Library of Things” that will include books, materials, and supplies necessary for students to complete projects or activities based on the books they check out.

This project will extend learning by providing students with the materials needed to apply the skills and knowledge acquired from how-to books. It will also serve to inspire a love of reading and improve comprehension skills by engaging students in hands-on projects and it will allow students to express their creativity through the completion of various projects, which they might not otherwise have the opportunity to complete due to a lack of resources.

Though the students at our school come from a variety of economic backgrounds, they are all united by their love of learning. I am a huge believer in learning through reading and doing, as well as encouraging reading by focusing on a students' interests. I do not want any of my students to be held back from trying something new or doing something they love simply because they do not have access to the needed materials, therefore I believe the Library of Things will provide a necessary resource to my students.
