Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Creating a physical space that feels less like a clinical testing center and more like a welcoming living room is essential for a successful Response to Intervention (RTI) period. When students step out of their main classrooms for targeted intervention, they often carry a subconscious weight of academic anxiety.

Introducing a cozy rug and flexible seating instantly shifts that mindset by signaling a safe, low-stress environment.

The warm vibes created by these materials dismantle the traditional, rigid classroom structure, replacing it with a sanctuary where students feel secure enough to take academic risks, make mistakes, and participate without fear of judgment.

Beyond emotional comfort, the physical freedom provided by flexible seating directly impacts cognitive engagement during intensive small-group instruction. Traditional desks can feel restrictive, especially for students who have already spent hours trying to sit still. A soft rug gives students a dedicated space to gather closely, while flexible seating allows for subtle, natural body movements that satisfy sensory needs without causing distraction. This comfort keeps students physically grounded and mentally alert, meaning less time is spent managing restlessness and more time is dedicated to mastering foundational skills.

Finally, a distinct change in the physical environment acts as a powerful mental reset for struggling learners. Moving from a large, high-stimulus classroom to a cozy, specialized area tells the brain it is time to transition into a focused mode of thinking. This environmental shift promotes a sense of belonging and community, turning what could be viewed as a chore into an anticipated part of the school day. By transforming our RTI space into a comfortable learning lounge, we give students the exact environment they need to recharge, build confidence, and close achievement gaps.
