The Lasting Impression of Art-A Gift to the School
My students need materials such as brushes, frame paper and paint to be able to express themselves through watercolor while discovering they can create beautiful works of art.
My students have not been introduced to "real" art supplies and experienced the difference they can make in the quality of their art work. The only budget for art supplies comes from a general budget which is quickly exhausted with basic requirements in math, reading, and writing.
My students are sixth graders in an elementary school with no school specialists.
Some parents involve their children in sports and music as extracurricular activities, but extremely rarely are they ever taught skills in expressing themselves as artists. I think art is a non-aggressive way to express emotion and discover self. Regular drawing paper, crayons, and tempera paint is typically all they are exposed to in our district. I would like them to see the difference quality art supplies can make. I believe it will fill an emotional need as well as build self confidence and self discovery.
My Project
We will begin with techniques of watercolor painting and build to a final painting on quality watercolor paper. I will then select several works to be framed and displayed in the school permanently. In order to do this I will need watercolor brushes, paint, and watercolor paper. I also need 8 frames to display student artwork permanently in our school and foam board to use as display boards.
Students will see they can use art as a means of expression. Their self esteems' will improve and they become impressed with their abilities.
As our lives become more impacted with technology and the pressures of the age of information, I would like students to maintain balance with creative, positive, self expression through watercolor painting.
It is a simple medium that results in a quality project. They are sure to see themselves as artists.
