Ms. Richardson from Salt Lake Cty UT is requesting Classroom Basics through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
Help me give my students markers, Post-its, posters, and notebooks to maximize interactive, inclusive learning!
I have the pleasure of working with some of the most resilient, courageous, hardworking students in education. I work in a "minority-majority" urban school with students who have survived war, famine, political threats, and violence. Because they have seen the worst of humanity, they bring a genuine desire to make the world a better place through their own growth and learning.
Some of the students who come into my classroom have never had access to formal schooling, meaning they are just learning to read and write.
This can be intimidating as they watch their peers prepare for college. Yet, I have seen miracles happen and remind my students of this daily. We talk about the many paths towards education in my classroom often. We seek to find ways to eliminate barriers.
I teach English to students new to the U.S. Many have recently lived in refugee camps or asylum centers and have never experienced a highly interactive classroom. I want to fill my classroom with supplies that students can start using on the first day of school. The supplies I have selected provide students with tools they can bring to school and home: notebooks, markers, highlighters, and Post-its. Other supplies are needed to help students work in small groups on whiteboards and brainstorm on large Post-its that can be referred to later. Finally, I have selected items like fidget rings and spinners to help students who are struggling to focus due to trauma or anxiety.
