My school boasts the second largest minority student body in the state of Utah. It is an inner city public school with some of the richest diversity found in the state. With in this community of learners, 10% are refugees. These are the students that I teach. They are courageous survivors of war, famine, genocide and discrimination. Many have lost family members, friends and seen suffering no person should ever experience. Yet, they have hope. They come to school ready to learn, despite the fact that many have been denied an opportunity for a formal education in their home country. They fight for literacy, just as they fought for their lives. They are expected to learn math, science and history with students who have been speaking English their whole lives and attending school since the age of five. Despite this daunting reality, they do not give up. They come to school with as much passion as one might imagine. My life has dramatically changed working with such extraordinary youth.
