Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach sixth grade at a low-income school. My students are very focused on learning and have shown a dedication to increasing their reading levels. They are very bright but have few resources available to them. They just need to have people believe in them and show them that they can accomplish anything they hope for.

My students are eager to read books together as a class, but it is difficult for our school to afford class sets of books. Many schools require students to purchase their own copies of required reading material, but my students are not in a position to be able to do that.

If each student in my class had a copy of "The Golden Goblet," a fictional story set in ancient Egypt, we could read it together and have rich classroom discussions about what life was like in ancient Egypt. The main character is a boy who the students can relate to in a great piece of historical fiction.

With your help, social studies could come alive for my students as they increase their reading skills.
