Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When a book opens, a story begins in your mind. It takes one book to hook you and make you a life-long reader. Kate DiCamillo and Pam Muñoz have done just that for my class. A story is always at your fingertips! My class is eager to continue reading more literature from their favorite authors.

My class is an amazing group of gifted students who go to school in a low economic area.

Our school budget is very tight with no room for extra spending. There is no money to buy additional supplementary materials. If some money is set aside, it is usually used for intervention for low performing students. The gifted cluster in the upper grades needs resources and materials to enrich their learning, unfortunately money is a major stumbling block. Our school is in economic hardship with the entire student body qualifying for free lunch. We are a program improvement school and desperately need to reach out to our gifted clusters to further enrich their education.

My Project

Even though my class is considered gifted, unfortunately these students get overlooked in favor of programs such as intervention, as most schools focus on underachieving students while forgetting to maximize the gifted cluster. My students have the drive and desire to read literature, yet they lack the resources. They have developed a love for two specific authors: Kate DiCamillo and Pam Muñoz Ryan. Both authors have hooked them into asking daily what book they will read next. They want to read at least two additional chapter books from their favorite authors by the end of the year. My students will learn how authors create a passion for reading fine literature that will last a lifetime. They will move on from 4th grade with at least three books read from the works of their favorite author.

Having a class set of books (The Tale of Despereaux, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, and Becoming Naomi Leon) from my students' two favorite authors will help them reach their goal of adding three more pieces of literature to their library of read books.

I look forward to using these books to continue to foster a love of reading in them. Your support will make a difference for my deserving students.
