This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine the first month of school in 4th grade. My challenge is to inspire young readers to find meaning and inspiration through literature.

Reading is quite a challenge for a struggling reader.

They have to be interested and engaged with the reading material. Having access to interesting and exciting chapter books is of critical importance to motivate struggling readers. "The Gift Giver" by Joyce Hansen is the perfect book for the beginning of the year for 4th grade. It is about a group of elementary school students in New York City. It is about friendships, life lessons, and the gifts that young people can offer each other.

My Project

The book truly reflects the lives of young people and the struggles they face. Reading literature that mirrors some of their daily realities in a positive way gives young people an opportunity to learn about how to face certain challenges such as gangs, foster homes, and "feeling different" from others.

Your help in supplying these books for my 33 students to read during their first month of school will truly help to continue motivating them to become great readers as well as thoughtful friends to each other.
