My Students

Although we are learning in a virtual environment, my students have persevered and impress me every day. They are willing to engage in thoughtful discussions and continue to work well independently and in groups. Despite the challenges of this school year, these students show up every day, ready to learn.

My Project

During the school year, Biotechnology students have been reading The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. We were also able to watch the HBO movie. Students have engaged in weekly, online discussions and group projects to express their thoughts and feelings about the book.

It would be a remarkable experience to speak with the Lacks family about Henrietta, her cells, and the connection between race and medical disparities.

This speaking engagement will be held virtually with two of Henrietta Lacks's family members - grand-children and/or great-grand children. I would love for my students to learn from the family and to ask questions to further their knowledge of this very important story.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
