Our final project this year was creating Hogwarts suitcases filled with different types of information connected to our reading and learning. The colored pens, markers, and paintbrushes allowed students to truly explore their creative side, resulting in colorful suitcases decorated with drawings, labels, designs, and, of course, plenty of Harry Potter stickers to boot.\r\n\r\nStudents also created Hogwarts-inspired scarves filled with character traits, compare-and-contrast statements, and connections between different characters from our stories. What began as a literacy activity quickly transformed into something much more creative and meaningful. Students who were hesitant to write full paragraphs were suddenly eager to add colors, symbols, labels, and details to their work while discussing characters and ideas together.\r\n\r\nMuch like students waiting for an owl from Hogwarts, many of our multilingual learners are still discovering their own voices and confidence. These supplies helped students express ideas, tell stories, and add a little magic to their learning along the way. After watching a fun Flocabulary video connected to Edgar Allan Poe, students were suddenly eager to flip through the graphic collection, study the illustrations, and talk about the stories together. The visuals gave students confidence to explore texts that might otherwise feel intimidating.\r\n\r\nThe excitement around these books has already begun spreading through our academy. Our ELL Honors English 10 team is hoping to use the graphic version of Lord of the Flies next year, and teachers have also started talking about ways Animal Farm could support comprehension and discussion for multilingual learners.\r\n\r\nWhat excites me most is thinking about introducing these stories from the very beginning of next year. I cannot wait to help students explore mood, tone, symbolism, and suspense through books that feel engaging and accessible. Students who would normally avoid books were suddenly flipping through pages, studying the illustrations, pointing at pictures, and trying to talk about the stories in English.\r\n\r\nBooks like Can You Survive 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea?, Journey to the Center of the Earth, and Around the World in 80 Days gave students a way into reading that did not feel overwhelming. The visuals helped students understand the stories, practice speaking, sequence events, and build confidence.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite moments happened when a 12th grade ELL teacher in our academy was reading Call of the Wild with students. I was able to share the graphic version with her class, giving students another bridge into understanding the story.\r\n\r\nWhat excites me most is beginning next year with these books already in our classroom library. These stories invite students into reading instead of pushing them away from it. Not only have they been challenged by them but I too have had to rethink how I teach in order to use these to the fullest.\r\n\r\nDespite teaching computer skills, skills like reading and problem solving in my classroom have become more dynamic and purposeful. Students engage with clues, instructions, and clues embedded in each breakout activity, using text, evidence, and context to unlock codes and solve puzzles. Rather than passively reading from a textbook, students apply literacy in real time — interpreting, analyzing, and synthesizing information with their peers as they work to \"break out\" before the timer runs out. \r\n\r\nThis morning in my first block I watched in awe as the student put their heads together and worked diligently with each other to solve their Breakout. Every student was engaged. Several students who often struggle with traditional assignments have absolutely thrived with Breakout Boxes. I've seen students who are usually quiet or hesitant to participate become natural leaders in their teams, encouraging others, thinking creatively, and celebrating each success. Others who typically disengage in whole-class discussions are now eager to read clues out loud, describe reasoning, and help guide their group toward the solution.
