It has become quite the incentive to get to class on time!\r\n\r\nRight now, students are practicing reading and following directions to program the Sphero to move. I am especially excited about the unexpected math connections! Students are exploring how speed and time affect the distance the Sphero travels. How far will it go at this speed for three seconds? What happens if we change the speed? Suddenly, we are reading, using math, making predictions, and problem-solving all at once!\r\n\r\nWith the Makey Makey, students are exploring circuits and learning how to make a light turn on. This has been a learning experience for me, too! We are discovering its possibilities together, using English to ask questions, share ideas, and figure out what works.\r\n\r\nWhat I love most is seeing students who have often struggled with traditional learning become excited, curious, and willing to try again. Since school started in August, students have been busy at work learning class and school expectations, practicing speaking in English during Socratic Seminars, and completing writing diagnostics that will serve as a baseline assessment to measure their progress. Your donation has ensured that students each have a pencil to write with. In the shared images, check out the Class Expectation posters students collaborated on! They used pencil first and then added color with markers and construction paper. Students were excited (and relieved) when I told them that I would provide each of them with their own folder. The folders are organized by period, so each color designates a specific class and makes it easy for students to identify which class is theirs.\r\n\r\nIn addition to practicing collaboration and speaking in class, students have started writing. For this reason, I used the lamination sheets from this donation to create a \"Rate Your Writing\" anchor chart. The plan is that students will refer to the chart to score their own writing before they submit future assignments. This chart will be a tool that we use frequently in class, and the laminating pouches ensure that the examples are preserved.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, besides writing, we will be starting our unit on the theme of \"Survival.\" The unit is anchored by two texts (\"Two Were Left\" by Hugh B. Cave and \"The Most Dangerous Game\" by Richard Connell). As we read these texts, students will use highlighters to annotate for character traits of survivors. I set up the materials in an assembly-line style. My students in wheelchairs were able to \"put in\" the items into the bag. This was an activity that they could participate in independently. While completing this task, my students with limited verbalizations showed joy and pride by smiling and signing an approximated form of \"more.\"\r\n\r\nMy classroom that supports students with Level 3 Autism, were equally able to complete this activity with no to limited support from the teachers. They enjoyed completing a work assignment from beginning to end. In fact, many were disappointed when the project was finished and all the bags were packed! One student used his communication device to communicate the words \"like\" and \"bag\".\r\n\r\nWe completed 25 bags (out of 100). Tomorrow, our plan is to package them in the clear bags.
