Laminated materials stayed durable and reusable, so students could revisit key lessons whenever they needed extra support. Learning a new language is so difficult, and being able to read a novel in that language may have seemed insurmountable at first. But, they did it. These kits have been a catalyst for creativity, problem-solving, and the resurgence of pure, unstructured imagination—something we greatly need in our classrooms again!\r\n\r\nWhen the LEGO first arrived, we focused intensely on how to use the instruction manuals. I explicitly taught students how to use the instruction manuals, which led to increased sequencing, visual, and spatial acuity. Following the precise directions has been a powerful exercise in sequential thinking.\r\n\r\nHowever, the real magic happened when they began to venture out and try to build without instructions. Once they had mastered the basics, students began to push the instructions aside, seeing the pieces as limitless possibilities.\r\n\r\nI've watched students collaborate on imaginative and often simple designs. Recently, they have been focused on creating abstract sea creatures, with the crab-like ones being the most attempted designs! They've really managed to claw their way to creativity! With the ample supply of new LEGO, we are excited to expand our skills and move on to more complex builds in the coming weeks. Building without instructions forces them to tap into their imagination, use critical thinking, and experiment with design.\r\n\r\nThese kits are a powerful tool for teaching engineering concepts, but their biggest benefit is nurturing that essential creative spark. They are learning to build something unique and understand that their imagination is their most powerful design tool.\r\n\r\nThank you for giving my students the chance to learn, build, and dream bigger than the instructions allow. You really helped us piece together a fantastic learning experience! The puzzles, organizers, and mat have made a profound impact, turning classroom challenges into moments of true growth.\r\n\r\nThis entire project was inspired by a student who, earlier this year, struggled greatly with puzzles, quickly getting frustrated with no idea how to start. They were completely baffled by the border, but your donation changed everything!\r\n\r\nTo help, I paired the student with another student who shared a similar language. Together, with peer translations and visual examples, we taught the fundamental skill of puzzle assembly. With patience, they learned the skill, which also improved their understanding of sequencing. When they placed that final piece, the moment was electric! It proves that success is often just a puzzle piece away. Now they have the confidence to move on to harder challenges.\r\n\r\nYour more complex puzzles are also teaching vocabulary organically. When students ask, \"What is this thing?\" while searching for a piece, we can discuss new English words like wolf or castle in context. The hands-on nature means their language skills are really fitting together!\r\n\r\nMost importantly, your donation is teaching perseverance. As the puzzles get harder, students inevitably feel frustrated. This is our moment to talk about how teaching perseverance and not giving up are key to success in all areas. I remind them, \"Don't worry, we'll get this all sorted out!\" We learn to take strategic breaks, use the puzzle mat to save our progress, and return the next day to conquer the challenge. They are learning that even the toughest challenge is solvable if you just connect the dots and don't give up!\r\n\r\nThank you for helping my students learn to stick with tough tasks and complete the picture of what they can accomplish.","fullyFundedDate":1760584050068,"projectUrl":"project/the-great-puzzle-adventure-pieces-word/9828028/","projectTitle":"The Great Puzzle Adventure: Pieces, Words, and Wonder","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Preston","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp4607_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1510611246709","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/preston"},{"teacherId":7180677,"projectId":9466541,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generosity, my students had the opportunity to experience the true power of compassion in action. For high schoolers, mastering organizational skills is perhaps the most significant hurdle outside of content knowledge. It isn't just about neatness; it's an essential executive function skill that directly translates into academic confidence, allowing them to manage complex schedules, track assignments across multiple classes, and prepare for the demands of post-secondary education. By providing these simple, practical resources, you are investing in reducing the feeling of being overwhelmed, empowering them to take genuine ownership of their learning process, and ultimately helping them unlock their full academic potential.\r\n\r\nThe specific items you funded—the binder tabs—are already making a huge, visible difference in our classroom every day. Students are using these critical tools to quickly and logically divide their three-ring binders into subject areas and academic units. This seemingly small intervention allows them to swiftly file handouts and keep track of materials needed for long-term projects. Because everything is instantly accessible and clearly marked, they spend less precious time searching and far more time engaging with the actual material. These magical materials have immediately become core components of our classroom.\r\n\r\nThe beautifully illustrated books have made the world of Harry Potter more vibrant and accessible, captivating students as they follow the narrative.\r\n\r\nThe puzzles have been especially significant. For many students who haven't encountered this low-cost pastime in their home countries, puzzles are a brand-new, exciting challenge. This activity is a fantastic way to practice foundational reading skills, such as matching colors and shapes to build a complete picture. Our plan to have students write descriptive sentences about the finished puzzles further connects this skill to literacy.\r\n\r\nBuilding on this hands-on excitement, we also recently acquired a kit of plain Legos. Once we accumulate more sets, students will begin using the Lego builders book to explore their own imagination with Harry Potter. This will be a fantastic next step, moving them from guided activities to pure creative expression, allowing them to truly use their imagination and bring their own unique thoughts and stories to life in three dimensions.\r\n\r\nFinally, the stickers were once again an immense hit, affirming their place as an annual favorite! It's amazing how much joy these small items bring, allowing students to personalize their Chromebooks and celebrate their own connection to the magic.\r\n\r\nYour support goes far beyond purchasing supplies; you are helping us introduce novel learning tools and bring simple, genuine joy to the students every day. Thanks to your support, our classroom has been transformed into a truly enchanted space of hands-on discovery, and the results have been nothing short of astonishing.\r\n\r\nWe recently began our unit by tackling character traits—a skill that is notoriously difficult for young minds to grasp. Understanding a character's internal motivations and external features, and tracking how they change over the course of a story, can be a real struggle.\r\n\r\nAfter a particularly challenging lesson, I introduced the Lego kits as a much-needed magical reprieve—a kind of Focus Potion for the mind—and the results were immediate and spellbinding. My most talkative student, who rarely sits still, was quiet and intensely focused on building her kit. Our most wiggly young man, who often struggles to stay in his seat, was entirely focused and, best of all, was asking questions and problem-solving in English.\r\n\r\nThe biggest breakthrough, however, came as they assembled the minifigures. I asked a student to describe the minifigure's external features. After easily describing the colors and clothing, I pointed to the startled facial expression of the Ron minifigure. The student immediately said he looked \"frightened.\" It was a true moment of Divination—they were using the visual, external clues on the minifigure's face to unravel the inner workings of the character's mind. This concrete, three-dimensional practice suddenly made the abstract concept of character traits as clear as a Pensieve memory.\r\n\r\nBeyond the Lego kits, the Harry Potter Pop-Up Book was utterly beloved. Students were spellbound, watching the settings literally spring to life, allowing us to preload challenging vocabulary and explore places as marvelous as Diagon Alley and the secret chambers of the castle.\r\n\r\nWe've now moved on to building the magnificent Hogwarts Castle. This build is difficult, requiring the focus of a Potions Master following a strict recipe, but students are rising to the challenge. They are working together like members of the Order, collaboratively conquering complexities and communicating their ideas using the new vocabulary they've learned.\r\n\r\nThis level of deep learning, exploration, and engagement was only possible because of your tremendous generosity.
