The Day Plastics Ate the World

Help me give my students a raised garden to observe trash decomposing, a camera to produce videos to share their message of reducing single-use plastics, and other resources to study the impact plastics are having on our world.

My Students

Our school is a rural school that serves many neighboring communities. We have a mix of abilities from those functioning several grade levels below their level, to those functioning much higher than their grade level. Our families are hardworking and do all they can to support their kids.

My students are rock stars and deserve everything, and if I could, I'd give them the world.

DonorsChoose.org and the amazing donors behind it help me at least open the window to that world and see what's out there. You also let them see that in this crazy, scary world, kindness is still there.

My Project

Help my students become environmental engineers and solve the problem of plastics in our world. We recently studied the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (a giant "island of trash floating in the Pacific Ocean - bigger than Texas - just in case you are wondering). The kids were horrified to see how much plastic was affecting our world. Then, they learned that the ratio of plastics to plankton in the Gulf of Mexico was larger than in the Garbage Patch and they wanted to make a change. So we studied the work that environmental engineers are doing to find solutions.

My students want to learn all they can about plastics and figure out a way to help convince the world to reduce their use of them.

I reached out to some amazing educators who have been very involved in learning and teaching about plastics to help us find the best way to help make this happen for my kids.

They want to compare the rate that different trash breaks down. We decided a raised garden bed would work well for that. We'll put different types of trash in soil and observe it over time, and record the results with a series of pictures. One of my students did some research and discovered that meal worms eat styrofoam! So we will observe some meal worms over time and determine the rate that they break down the styrofoam. We'll use the microscope to see them in action and record them so all 3 classes can see. Ultimately, they want to create a series of educational videos to share with other students as well as other groups to teach about alternatives to single-use plastics. You can help them reach their goals!
