This was such an awesome start to the year! It was our first full day together and it gave the kids a chance to relax and get ready to start their year off on the right track! We used the STEM activity as an opportunity to set up our standards for group work. The kids did an amazing job!! One of my favorite parts, is activities like this are the great equalizer. It allows our kids who have struggles academically to lead the group. They aren't afraid to try and \"fail\", because they know they can try again. And that drawer for supplies are the pins, highlighters, and the pencil sharpeners from my project. Literally could not do it without you!\r\nAs for the Band-Aids and the cleaning supplies, I can't keep enough Band-Aids in this classroom, lol. The Band-Aid can make anything feel better. First, I'm able to pull certain ones that tie in with our content that we are teaching at that moment, which is always a plus. The kids absolutely love them. They're high interest and pretty quick reads for those kids who haven't built their reading stamina yet. Because their topics are so diverse, lots of different kids find books they like. I can have one reading about Legos, another reading about Simone Biles, and the other about Alien Abductions. The bartering that hit the moment the books came to light was awesome! I very happily share that obsession with the kids in my classroom! Even though I am not an ELA teacher, my goal is to help every student find their perfect niche in reading. As a child who grew up in the 80s, when playing outside was what everything was about. I grew up in a family with lots of love lots of outdoor time but very little of anything else. Going to the library every week with some of my happiest memories. Those books would take me everywhere in the world. I want to help kids have that same feeling. Thank you so much for putting such awesome books into my classroom library. My obsession has apparently been passed on very strongly. When the new books came out, I was instantly surrounded by a mass of hand who all were trying to grab the new books. Everyone had to take a step back, turn around and sit down, and I've pulled numbers to see who got to pick books 1st lol. You brought that excitement to my classroom! Our school absorbed a neighboring school that had to be closed. The students that came in were very unsure of themselves, the families that came in were understandably nervous. It was hard for them to come in and become part of our school family. This project allowed me to create a more welcoming environment for the kids. That was very important to me. \r\nIt went beyond that, though. The kids absolutely loved the little encouraging tokens, and cards that I was able to write for them. Very quickly, I had to keep a stash of those out and available so that students could give them to each other. Which I absolutely loved. I knew that the students had seen the signs around the mirror. I knew that occasionally some of them would go stand at the mirror and read the signs. I did not, however, realize that they were focusing so much on what the sign said. One day one of the kids was having a very bad day. I have a sign on my wall that says handle with care, students who are having a tough time and just need some extra understanding can put their name on that sign with a sticky note. One of our students had put her name on the sign for the second day in a row. Before I had an opportunity to talk to her one on one, one of the other students did. She simply took her by the hand, walked her to the mirror and stood behind her while she looked in the mirror and read the words. I thought I might cry. You gave that to me and to my kids. This is easily one of my favorite lessons of the entire year. It is also easily one of my most exhausting lessons of the year lol it's funny how those go hand-in-hand. The excitement that these kids have when they get into the owl pellets and start making their discoveries makes my teacher heart dance! I teach a very different group of students this year than I have taught in the past. Many of our students this year have some pretty significant trauma based struggles. I wasn't sure how well the lesson would go over with all of the kids this year. I wish I could share the sense of excitement, discovery, and a fair amount of trepidation at first with you. All three of my classes got so involved in the lessons, so excited about what they were discovering, and I have to admit that almost every single student brought home a bag of fur and bones to share with their families lol. Today taught a lesson to my kids. They learned that studying owl pellets is a unique and very detailed way of understanding; number one -what the owl eats, but also determining the habitat that the owl lives in. As a science teacher, that's the most important part for me, that they actually learned from the lesson. But I have to tell you even more important than that, was seeing the excitement on these kids' faces who have spent the year simply existing in the classroom. The kids whose lives have made school, not as important. I was able to reach them and show them something so exciting. I couldn't have done it without you! I honestly thought that I had written in response to this project months ago. Having quality digital scales in my science classroom makes so many of our hands-on investigations go so much easier. Having digital scales that are quality, easy to work with, and always reliable even better. There is also the fact that I teach fifth grade, meaning, having such great high-quality digital scales that are easy for the kids to maneuver around the room without them, falling apart, or getting broken, Even better than the others. We've used the scales off and on through different investigations. The pictures that I shared are from our owl pellet dissection, which is always a favorite. And my camera was so busy catching kids finding cool bones that I didn't catch any pictures, but the kids went back to using the digital scales after they were done to weigh the different bones because they couldn't believe how light the bones actually were. The scales were able to weigh mouse bones. That's the high-quality scales that you gave to my classroom.
