Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
It's often said that the best readers make the best writers, and for a good reason. My students love to read and enjoy diving into texts together as a class. My students need exemplary picture books to use as mentor texts to encourage them as writers.
They are fun, high-energy, and inquisitive group of students!
They love writing and implementing the crafts that they learn into their own writing.
Our school is part of a very large, urban school district with a very diverse student population.
Our school is a dual language Spanish Immersion Magnet, in which all students in the school receive half of their instruction in English and half of their instruction in Spanish. By the time they become sixth graders, nearly all of the students are bilingual.
My Project
Mentor texts are a great way to get students excited about writing. Often times, the best texts to use as mentor texts are children's books and/or illustrated books, because their length allows for them to be thoroughly examined multiple times, which is the key to successfully using a text in a "mentor" capacity. Within writer's workshop, I will use the books as part of modeling the teaching point, showing them how the writer used the technique within his/her writing, so they can understand how to use the same technique in their writing.
With these mentor texts I will be able to hone in on the craft being implemented and will better enable students to improve and grow their skill-set as writers.
By providing mentor texts for my students, I am able to better instruct them in their writing by giving them meaningful examples.
