My Students

Chemistry is a fun, yet challenging, class for High School students. We spend each day in Chemistry discovering new ways of thinking about the world around us. One of our biggest challenges is understanding the connection between numbers and the concepts the number represent.

High school chemistry students are very diverse.

They are typically sophomores and juniors, but some freshman and seniors find their way to our class each year. We have students that come from financially comfortable backgrounds, and others from families that are struggling to feed and clothe themselves regularly. Some students have few responsibilities outside of their schoolwork, while others are the primary care-giver for younger siblings. The most impressive quality that these diverse students share is their desire to succeed at an academically challenging course that is not required for graduation, but is required to be eligible for a 4-year college or university.

My Project

Calculations and problem solving are some of the most challenging aspects to any chemistry class. From their math classes, most students are skilled at manipulating numbers in a purely algebraic sense, but applying those skills to word problems can present a challenge. Adding complexity to those problems, by including scientific notation and significant figures, can make that challenge nearly impossible for some students. Often students are trying to master the use of scientific notation on their calculators, rather than understanding what these numbers really mean. Having a standardized set of classroom calculators for each student will help us get past the technical aspects of using calculators to a deeper understanding of the content. Some students are trying to perform calculations with scientific notation long-hand! A challenging task for even seasoned students.

Providing students with consistent technology will give them the confidence to solve problems that might otherwise give them trouble.

Knowing how to use a single device, and knowing that one is always available to them, will allow their minds to contemplate deeper and more important questions. This will allow them to improve their performance and achieve a greater degree of academic success in chemistry.
