Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

At our program, we learn a multitude of skills to prepare ourselves to be as independent as possible when we leave. The campus is a moderate to severe specialty site where all students and teachers know and accept one another. Our classroom is a second home for our students in a lot of ways.

Every student in our class is held to a high standard and always rises to the occasion.

We have seen students exceed expectations and absolutely blow everyone away with a new sense of confidence and respect for themselves. While here they make lifelong friends, achieve goals, work, and explore the community. I am always so proud of watching them grow and shine in their own ways. When they leave here we know that they are as prepared for the real world as they can be.

My Project

This has been a wildly unpredictable year in education. The increased need for individual supplies has led us to running out of these essential supplies mid-year. This year we have to constantly be prepared for simultaneous teaching as students get placed on quarantine. Printing has increased, leading to us running out of ink, increased communication has lead to us running out of envelopes.

With the increased need for individual items, we have begun looking into more long lasting and eco-friendly options for the classroom.

Lamination allows us to make reusable options for our students, and with lamination comes the need for Velcro, etc.

Our time in the classroom together has also increased, leading to a need for students with auditory sensitivities to require noise cancelling headphones. We are also trying to give the students more responsibility by providing them with their own plate and silverware for breakfast, lunch and cooking lessons. In order to give our students independence and responsibility for their individual items, we are also asking for storage to make sure that each student and item has a place so we aren't mixing and matching supplies as we go.
