Picture this scene if you will: It's back to school night. You are meeting the teacher and seeing the classroom for the first time. You are excited, but there is something lingering in the back of your mind. You walk into the classroom and it hits you. You have to spend the next twenty - thirty minutes in a hard plastic classroom chair. You sit down and immediately begin to fidget - this is uncomfortable. It's hard to pay attention, right? Now imagine sitting in a cold, hard, plastic, classroom chair every day for hours at a time. It doesn't have to be that way! Flexible seating alleviates the stress and discomfort of the traditional classroom chair. I firmly believe it should be an option in every classroom. It is increasingly important in a classroom like ours. My students are adults with a range of sensory needs that can lead to behaviors. Flexible seating would alleviate behaviors in a multitude of ways by allowing choice, and comfort. You wouldn't willingly sit in a classroom chair, why should our students have to.
