My Project

Sullivan STEAM is a preschool-8th grade magnet school in south Minneapolis. Sullivan is home to a diverse group of learners including English Language Learners from Somali and other East African backgrounds, as well as other cultures from around the globe, making up approximately 37% of our school. Over 80% of our students receive free/reduced price lunch, and many students are identified as having special needs.

As a Title 1 school, many of our families also experience homelessness, food insecurity, and difficult situations that prevent them from having all of their basic needs met.

As a School Social Worker for a Middle School, I am striving to help ensure that students are showing up to school as their best and preferred version of themselves. Children who have their nutrition needs met are more likely to attend school and be engaged in learning and students who feel confident about how they are presenting themselves are more likely to have more positive interactions with others and feel more capable overall. My project will help fund snacks for my students as well as essential hygiene products. Students will be able to discretely take what they need from my office without judgement or questions.
