Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students attend my resource reading class in order to bring up their reading levels to be more successful in school, and in the life. Most of my students have a hard time staying focused in school while in class, and my goal is to make them feel that they are in a safe learning environment where they don't have to feel judged.
I teach at a Title I middle school in an urban neighborhood.
Seventy-four percent of our students qualify for free or reduced rate lunches. Many come from very technology-poor homes. My students love technology and topics where they can discuss issues and express opinions. My school lacks the technology to meet my students’ needs, and I am concerned that their lack of exposure will not prepare them for the technology fluency requirements in high school. My goal is to create a classroom environment where students are motivated by technology to improve their literacy and communication skills.
My Project
The best way to get lost is in a good book, and my students are struggling readers at different levels. Almost all of my students pick books based on the covers, and I want to show them it's not the outside of the book that matters. It's what's on the inside that matters. With the requested copies of The Boy in The Striped Pajamas with the audio and teacher workbook, my students will be able to plot the story on a story map. They will also be able to make connections to the past, based on this book. Many of my students are interested in the Historical time Period that this book takes place in.
