The students here at my school, have many worries outside of our building. They never know when their next meal will be when they leave here. They may not have the proper clothing on cold winter days. They may also never know when parents will be returning from being incarcerated. The kids here have too much to worry about at such a young age.
These students are loving and have a great capacity for love even though their home life is rough.
They keep their smiles and focus on their future goals.
As their art teacher, I owe it to them to provide them with sufficient amounts of art supplies, so they will never have to worry while they are inside this building. It is our job to protect their innocence and love.
My Project
Books are not just a tool to be used in a regular education classroom. The art room is a place for our minds to wander and be creative. Books can do just that.
I have created a space where the kids can grab a book but they go back to their seats while reading.
With this project, I am hoping to give them an inviting place to read after they have finished their projects. Not only will they have tons of books to choose from, they will be comfortable and feel invited to read in the art room.
My main goal along with expanding their potential in all aspects of life, is to help them feel more comfortable experimenting with different parts of their brain.
Encouraging reading is not just their classroom teachers job, it's all of ours.
