Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Remember the paintings you did in school that your parents hung with pride on the refrigerator, or framed, or possibly still have? What if you never had the opportunity to feel the pride of taking a drawing and giving it life with vibrant color? What if you were restricted in the materials you had?
I teach art at a school that is in an extremely low economic area.
For most of my students my class is the first art class they have ever taken. I like to give my students the opportunity to explore as many different aspects and mediums in art as possible. Though they are limited in their art experience, my students still create amazing things in my class, and compete around our town in art competitions and display their art in a professional capacity. Some students come into my class and finally find the class that they excel in and can become passionate about school for the first time in their lives. Some advance and build amazing portfolios that they use to apply to colleges, and scholarships. I have seen my students create and learn amazing things with limited resources; I see their hunger for more. My goal this year is to give them more materials so they can continue to accomplish great things, and feel the pride of accomplishing their goals and creating something to be proud of.
My Project
The most frequent question I get from students entering into my art class is; "are we going to paint?" Painting is the most popular medium we work with in art class. However, I am very limited with resources to do so, there is very little money to extend to my class to provide the necessary materials to have a cohesive painting unit. Right now students are limited in the types of paint that are available and the quality of materials, some are very old and not easy to work with. They are also limited in quantity of work they can produce, making it difficult to complete one painting if any. In a cohesive painting unit students are learning a vast amount of skills; color theory, color aesthetics, chemistry of color, mixing color units, composition, design theory, art history, and cultural studies. With the materials I hope to get I can extend my painting unit to include basic techniques and go on to have them do projects where they are critically thinking and expressing their creativity.
With these paint materials, my students will have the opportunity to excel and experience art in its most fulfilling capacity.
They experience incredible pride in accomplishing a piece of work that they can keep forever as a testament to their skill. With these materials as a class we will have the chance to explore art in a more in depth, critical capacity. We can explore more cultures and historically recognized art, and develop new skills that they can use for the rest of their lives.
