Our school is in a high-poverty area. Our school is growing, and we have many new students. First grade is different now than when we were in school. We know so many more things about how to challenge our students and prepare them for their future.
Engagement is key for our students.
We want all of them to be engaged in their learning so they stay in school and succeed! My school has focused on engagement in all of our classrooms. We want our students to learn and be successful and have fun at the same time.
My Project
These books are going to make such a difference in my classroom. I am currently increasing the amount of books used in my classroom that have characters that look like them! They might only be 6 and 7 years old - but they notice right away when I use books that have characters that look like them. They call it out right away.
It is SO important to have good quality literature with characters that look like my students.
My students need to see themselves in our books. Thanks to Donors Choose I have gotten a good start on transforming our books in our library. But I still have far to go. Many of my books are just not engaging for my students. I want to transform our classroom library so they have books they CHOOSE to read and not feel they HAVE to read.
