My students need a space that is safe and comfortable. The supplies above allow for a sensory driven space for students for calming down. The TeePee is covered so that students feel protected.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This is my second year as a school counselor and I am determined to provide these students with the best support possible. Our school is a Title I school; our students are in need of a lot of support. As the school counselor, I run many groups and individual counseling sessions. Groups are focused on the needs of the students, determined by surveys by the teachers. The needs of the students this year consist of social skills, anger management, and anxiety.
Many students have unfortunate living situations.
They view our school as their safe place. As the school counselor, I have already networked with an organization to provide food on a weekly basis for those severely struggling families. I also network with another foundation for additional mental health and therapies to help those students who have been through a lot of tough times.
These students are the sweetest, determined, hard working individuals and they deserve a bright future and that is what I plan on providing for them.
My Project
This past year my entire team at went through a 3 part training to become a trauma informed care school. We learned a lot through this training and part of our school-wide goal was to have a break area in every classroom. As the school counselor my office is viewed as a safe place. Last year my office moved and I was not able to create a "calm down corner". This year that's going to change!
My school is trauma informed and as the counselor my office is the main place these kids go to when they need support.
When students come to my office I want them to feel calm and relaxed. The items I am asking for all play a specific role in the emotional wellbeing of our students.
First, the TeePee creates a space where students can sit when they are feeling strong emotions. When learning about trauma, I learned and observed that when students feel strong emotions they like to cover themselves; whether its go under a desk or put a jacket over their heads they like the feeling of protection. It took me a long time to think of a way to have this level of support in my office and finally I thought of the teepee!
Next, I want to have a box for the teepee that has calm down tools. One of those tools will be journals. If students had an opportunity to reflect in a journal while calming down in the teepee they can manage their feelings in a healthy way. Also in this box I will have sensory shapes, motivational stress balls(so cool!), and a book of positive affirmations.
