Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class is full of life, love, and learning. The makeup of my students are those of low income and poverty stricken. Each day I greet them and assist them with breakfast as they walk in the door with nothing more than the backpack that we have provided them and the supplies inside that I have bought them to use at home, allowing for learning to continue beyond the walls of our school.
Things that are instilled in them are to never give up.
We each have an opportunity to learn and grow and we can do that together!
We often refer to the story of the little engine that could and use the I think I can phrase throughout difficulties that are faced, teaching them perseverance and self-dependence.
In my class mistakes are good. We learn and grow from them. You will often hear a student say oops, I didn't mean that or that was a mistake. The other students will reply that's ok... mistakes are good! They make our brains smarter!
Our class motto is be respectful, be responsible and most of all be successful! This is embedded in every minute of our 8 hours.
My Project
Through the use of an Apple MacBook and iPads, students in my class will be able to access technology and lessons that will allow for their needs to be met. With the vast population of English Language Learners and also special education students, having access to visual/auditory storybooks and reading apps will allow for differentiation of students individual needs. Having access to reading material in many languages as well as videos will assist my ESL students while also allowing them to use Google translate on their own, to translate into their native language. Apps for English and Native language development will be downloaded and used in whole group and small group as well as individually by the students themselves. Having access to tools such as the green screen software will also allow students to create their own projects. This will ensure student success by making the storytelling projects more meaningful as they will be starring in a movie or a clip or even a read aloud.
Having students create and star in their own storytelling projects will enhance student ownership of their learning.
Students in my class will gain so much from the use of these products because it will assist in bridging a gap from home (predominant language) to school while also connecting the 21st-century skills that technology brings.
Students at this age are ready to dive in with hands-on, engaging, technology-focused lessons. What better way to show what you know then to create a digital storytelling/retell green screen project? These projects can be downloaded, emailed and shared with parents to allow for a home/school connection. Doing so will ensure there are topics to talk about at home and also they can be saved for years to come.
