Let's face it: the key to today's changing world both in education and the workplace is technology. If you are not adept at computer skills you will be left behind in not only today's job market, but for personal learning as well. My students, AP English students in a poor, urban, district, are motivated to be successful and strive to be ready for college, but we lack technology to help them equal their suburban counterparts.
We as a class, have been working very hard to get ready for the AP English exam and prepare for SATs. I would like to encourage more active participation in the technology process in my classroom. We often search the web for definitions, literature(audio and visual) websites, and are about to begin producing videos to further enhance the learning process.
In order to make my classroom completely interactive, I would like to get a mobile netbook for my classroom so that I could hand it to various students and they could work online (in GoogleDocs etc.) and see their work immediately appear in front of them. Students could pass it around and share answers immediately and get them directly involved in the learning process. Not only this, but college classrooms demand this type of technological empowerment; they need to be ready to type and access the Internet for a successful college experience.
With this mobile netbook, we would be taking a step beyond the realms of the everyday classroom experience and move into the future-- a future in which each student should have the Internet at the fingertips for constant learning and sharing of information. Until that day comes, we can share the experience together and hopefully prepare for the college classrooms they will attend in the near future.
