The supplies came just in time for students to begin a mixed media portrait for Black History month. Each student chose someone significant to themself to portray in a portrait. They are currently exhibiting in the hallway! The next lesson we completed after the portraits was a class favorite—zines! Each student created a zine, a self-published work that consists of both text and visuals—based upon a topic they felt knowledgeable or passionate about. I love to give options for materials, so this was another mixed media project. It's always fun to see how different students gravitate towards different mediums, as well as see them try something completely new, even if it is out of their comfort zone. The students were very excited to get their hands on everything, especially the paint markers. \r\nWe have spent the last week utilizing oil pastels, practicing various techniques. A group of students requested we use them next, as they enjoyed trying them out in their own terms from the previous lessons. We are either moving onto still lives or landscapes using oil pastels, either way I know there will be some amazing results! It has been a true pleasure watching my students become interested in and engage with the lessons, as well as create work they are truly proud of. Thank you for making this happen, you have helped open doors of opportunity and curiosity for some them.
