Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is composed of students that are eager to learn, but possess one or more disabilities, which impact their academic development. Many of them have experienced trauma in their lives and have difficulty coming to school. My classes serve students with a wide range of disabilities, including intellectual disability, emotional behavioral disorder, autism spectrum disorder, and specific learning disability. The typical student in my class reads at a third-grade level and many struggle with basic phonics and number sense.
The opportunity and achievement gaps are apparent among our student population.
90% of our students are African American or Latino. In addition, a number of our students are English Language Learners that particularly struggle in my class, due to the extensive and complex scientific terms and concepts they must learn. Moreover, our department budget is limited, when compared to the number of students we serve, which ultimately impacts the amount of learning opportunities and experiences we can provide for them.
My Project
Technology is becoming a critical part of our world. We use technology in Medicine, Engineering, Law, and various other aspects. It is essential for our youth to be provided opportunities to access these 21st Century tools, so that we can further fuel societal innovation.
Laptops are amazing tools, that will help us access virtual labs!
It can sometimes be difficult to gather physical materials to run experiments/ labs in our science classroom. We are often searching for/ collecting physical resources, in the hopes that we will find scientific treasure, which we can use for experiments and labs. However, accessing materials for the most memorable science lab experiences can prove to be very costly. Through the use of computers to access virtual labs/experiments, we can significantly increase student opportunities to learn science and the use of technology. Most important, we can provide students with unique needs opportunities to access technology that can improve their quality of life (i.e. assistive technology).
