Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach Art to special education students. The educational program at our charter school embraces diversity in a supportive environment that is designed to meet the individualized academic and therapeutic needs of our student body. There are approximately 160 at-risk students who attend school here are classified as emotionally disturbed and learning disabled and present with an array of remedial needs.

As the only Art teacher at the school, my classes are made up of students with a range of learning levels, as well as a variety of emotional disturbances and behavioral issues. Along with refining my ability to teach to multiple levels of learning in a single class, my time spent here has provoked a new level of self-sufficiency for me in terms of classroom materials. Funding is short, and anything above the barest essentials must be procured by me.

Many of my students have expressed interest in pursuing visual arts degrees in college. It is my goal to expose them to as many artistic mediums as possible before they move on to higher education (College or technical schools). My students are in need of a portable cart for our LCD projector in order to better display power point presentations and interactive web museum visits. This portable cart will make it easier for me to give my students power point presentations and engage them in interactive web visit to different art museums. Some of my students also have trouble seeing the board and their parents don’t always have the funds to provide glasses. This cart would allow me to move around the room in order to create a larger and clearer image for my students to focus on.
