Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Thirty-three students; three computers. It's a long wait for a computer. It would be extremely helpful to my students to add another computer to our crowded classroom, which could be used for STEM projects and research at a student's desk.
My students are a talented, diverse group of 4th and 5th graders, ages 9 through 12.
They attend a suburban school that is designated as low income. I promote a very math/science oriented classroom, and my students become curious and excited about all things scientific. They love to learn, and are highly motivated to do independent work with the teacher as the mentor and guide. The students have found that through working together they can get much accomplished, and that with independence within guidelines they are able to pursue their own interests and learn more because they have a personal interest in the topic they are studying.
My Project
Adding a netbook computer and flashdrive to the classroom would increase student computer access, and the wait to do research on science and STEM projects would not be so long for my students. Students can research science fair projects, study scientific topics of interest through quality web pages, and use interactive web pages to gain a deeper understanding of scientific topics such as the periodic table, water cycle, weather, rock cycle, solar system, and other 4th and 5th grade topics. Students will learn that they do not need the teacher to "feed" them information, but instead can be self-directed learners with the teacher as a mentor.
This project will make a difference to my 33 students because they will have more computer access in the classroom, which in turn will help excite them for learning more about scientific/STEM topics.
Because they love technology, they will become more enthused about scientific research and study, and will have access to more information than can be stored in books in our over-crowded classroom. The more exposure the students gain, the more likely they are to pursue a STEM career as an adult.
