Technology for Literacy

My students need technology to improve literacy skills. Many of my students need practice with letters, sounds, sight words and comprehension. With iPads my students can have access to practice these skills using fun, interactive programs!

My Students

My students are comprised of a gifted and talented population. Although they are a gifted and talented class, they are extremely diverse in backgrounds, interests and abilities. This year I have a few ELL students and emergent readers. As a gifted and talented class, they have specific interests. They love learning about specific content areas-space, technology, animals, weather, etc.

In order to meet the needs of my ELLl students, I am looking to incorporate more technology into my classroom.

However, the early childhood grades are lacking in access to kid-friendly technology. My students are always talking about iPads! I would love to use iPads as a way to meet the needs of my ESL students who need the visual and auditory support. My school is fairly new to a great reading program called RAZ kids. However, the students are not able to use it in the classroom due to lack of computers. I would love to use the iPads as a way to utilize this program to improve decoding and comprehension. Technology would also keep these students highly engaged!

My Project

These tablets will give my ELL population access to practice literacy skills in a fun, engaging way. There are so many literacy programs and websites that offer practice on letters, sounds, sight words and comprehension. I would use iPads for these students as another strategy during readers workshop My school is also fairly new to the reading program RAZ kids but my students have not been able to take advantage of its academic benefits due to the lack of kid-friendly technology in the classroom. My students who really need that extra practice can also use the iPads to work on RAZ kids during center time.
