My Students

My students are Deaf or Hard of Hearing and come from many different backgrounds. They use American Sign Language (ASL) to communicate. Most students have very low language and academic skills when they first come to me due to lack of access to language in earlier years. This creates a long road ahead of us as we work to minimize those large gaps.

My students attend an urban school where one hundred percent of the students receive free breakfast and lunch.

The students come from many different backgrounds and face many different challenges in their day-to-day lives. There are many single income families and families that are receiving assistance in one form or another.

This year, I have eight students: one kindergartner, three first graders, three third graders and one in fourth grade. Most of my students' language and communication skills are very low. My challenge is to teach them their language, ASL, and academics at the same time. It is a tough challenge, and my students give me their best effort every day.

My Project

I have requested an Echo Spot for my classroom because my students need visuals all day long, and I think this would be a quick fix. I am constantly getting out our tablets and going on my computer to show them a picture of the concept we are currently learning whether it be a concept in science, math, language or history. The Echo Spot would be one more tool for us to use in the classroom for support.

Responsibility and independence are two big ideas we try to teach our students.

Requesting the charging station and cords will help in this matter. My students will be in charge of docking our tablets at the end of the day in one area of our room. I think having them be responsible for this will help them take pride in their daily jobs in the classroom and become more independent.
