I have 24 kindergarten students with a wide range of skills. Many are English Language Learners, some have special education needs, and some are from low income households. Some can read, while others are still learning letters. Some can count past 100, and others cannot count objects past 5. But, they all have one thing in common. They love to learn!
My goal as a teacher is to foster a love of reading.
Whether it is exploring books independently or sharing with a friend, listening to someone read a book, or actually reading on their own, I want the kids to read! I have collected many books over the years to provide my students with all types of reading; fiction and non-fiction, story books, picture books, nursery rhymes, leveled reading and more.
My group, this year, is incredibly sweet and good natured. They all work hard, whether they are above or below grade level. They love to help each other and work well together cooperatively.
My Project
Let me start by saying I have very mixed feelings about children and technology. I believe most children are over-exposed to screens, even if they are playing "educational" games. However, I cannot pretend that technology is not relevant and I understand that these children will need to be tech savvy as they get older.
My goal is not to make my students tech savvy or to put them in front of a screen for hours, but to use technology as a tool for learning.
Our school has access to several amazing learning programs that I feel good about using. I would like to have these Fire Tablets as a resource for students to listen to stories and to access the online learning programs. Some families do not have access to this type of technology and I would like to give those kids a chance to learn in a different way.
