I have wonderful students! They are kindergarteners, so that means they are 5 or 6 years old (I even started the year with a 4 year old!). They come to me with a very wide range of skills. At the beginning of the year some can read, write their name, add, count to 100, recognize all letters and more. Then there are some who do not know how to hold a pencil, recognize any letters or numbers, cannot spell their name or tell the names of colors. Some students are very well behaved and ready to learn new things. Others still need time to mature and learn social skills. Over 30% of our students are English Language Learners, and over 50% are on free or reduced priced lunch. We have families that really care, but do not always have the resources to help their children.
