Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
It seems that today's news is full of stories about education reform. Many states have chosen to adopt new, higher standards called "Common Core." Unfortunately, students from low performing areas may struggle to gain access to this rich academic content. Technology can help to bridge this gap!
I have been a math teacher in a predominately Hispanic school district with approximately 50% English Learners.
In addition, many of our school have been designated as low performing. Although many of our students have low socioeconomic status, we have been able to modernize many of our schools by qualifying for school improvement grants and federal and state funding. This has also allowed teachers to gain a significant amount of staff development. We are showing great gains on standardized tests and teachers are working as hard as they ever have. However, as our state progresses in the implementation of Common Core, these more rigorous standards could make our achievement gap even greater for our students. I have been selected as a resource for other teachers helping to get jump start in the implementation of these new standards. I have been assigned to two schools where I spend time in classrooms working with teachers and students demonstrating and modeling Common Core strategies.
My Project
My project utilizes the latest technology allowing students to use android tablets to access Common Core math standards. Students will be able to collaborate, research necessary facts and rules, record, and present their results to the class and share with other students. Using reading applications, such as Nook, students can highlight, define, and annotate key words in difficult math problem situations using a "Close Reading Common Core" strategy to help solve difficult problems. While working in groups, students can diagram and explain their thinking as well as collaborate and instantly share with others for feedback. Such successes will help improve the lives of our students by helping them to gain confidence, become better students, and help them be able to better explain their thinking. Also, the new standards were created to help students become more globally competitive using skills and technology of the 21st century. This will help to enhance their lives in the future as well.
Funding this project will give me a chance to demonstrate to the teachers and students that I work with in the classroom how to implement technology with their students.
This way I can impact even more students and help them to become more globally competitive in the 21st century. This will also help to give my low-performing, low-socioeconomic students the skills, confidence, and opportunity to close the achievement gap enabling them become more successful students.
