Help me give my students access to technology to close the education gap with 5 new Chromebooks.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I am excited to be a 4th-grade teacher of a diverse group of inquisitive students in Dorchester. I am inspired by my students every day, and I feel validated in my decision to change careers to teaching from being a legal secretary in 2016.
Technology is a wonderful way for my students to access their creative thinking and problem-solving skills.
It is extremely important that my students are digitally literate but unfortunately, our school is not 1 to 1 with Chromebooks.
My students are trying to maximize their learning and also become digital citizens in the real world. Through generous donations, my students have access to fifteen Chromebooks in our classroom but they need a classroom set (25) of Chromebooks so that all my students have on-demand access to technology and I can plan full-class lessons to integrate technology.
The five Chromebooks that I am requesting for my students will be used as soon as they arrive. I have integrated Chromebooks into my classroom over the past two years. I am able to use them not only as a digital resource but also as a tool to help my students who are struggling the most. An example of how I have used the Chromebooks this year is during independent reading. I was able to create read aloud videos with stopping points and think alouds which allow students to be more independent with a text that might be above their reading level. Students are able to read along and interact with the video, pausing at strategic times to ensure comprehension.
The donations to this project will help to empower my students and create agency and voice, all tools that will afford my students the opportunity to not only succeed but excel in today's society.
With common-core standards, the expectation is that my students will be able to compete with students from similar grades. The reality is that my students are expected to do that with limited resources. With your support, I can continue to level the playing field.
