Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students and families speak Spanish, Mam, Tongan, Arabic, Tagalog, Karen, Karenni, Nepali and Chinese. Since 45% of our students are English Language Learners, we have a rich academic program to meet their language needs. Our newcomer program serves up to forty students in our community who have moved here in the last year and speak little English. We also have a rich African American student population that thrives at our school.
Our students reflect the neighborhood's diverse immigrant and minority populations.
Throughout the year, we have cultural celebrations to celebrate the histories, cultures, and accomplishments of our diverse student population. While 9 out of 10 of our students are socioeconomically disadvantaged, we are rich in so many ways.
My Project
We have an amazing after-school program that is home to our sports teams: girls volleyball, girls and boys basketball, girls and boys soccer, as well as co-ed flag football! We recently received an amazing generous Donors Choose for new balls and equipment carts for practice time.
Now that students have the resources to practice, they need the materials to play their games with new jerseys!
Our students cannot afford to buy their own jerseys, and pour after-school program does not have the funds for these jerseys. We DO have an amazing t-shirt press at school though, so all we need are the jerseys and we can put the numbers on ourselves!
