Teaching Students to Sign To Enhance Language Development

My students need a comprehensive curriculum and support materials to learn sign language.

My Students

I have now been teaching sign language for 1 term to 120 second graders. They cannot get enough of this new (to them) language. I see them in the hall and they ask me for a new sign or they sign to me. They are all so eager to learn and I want to be able to provide the best for them.

My students come from all different types of families.

Many of my students are on free or reduced lunch. Although they come from different backgrounds, I haven't met one student yet who has not been excited to learn more signs. They want to learn and as they learn, they have improved their spelling and reading skills. One of our grade goals for the year are to raise their end-of-level language arts scores and ASL will help our students do that.

My Project

I'm requesting the Signing Times Classroom Edition and the complete 2nd series. As a mom, I have used Signing Times for 8 years and have seen amazing growth with my own child. I have a niece who uses sign to communicate and thanks mostly to Signing Times, my daughter and niece are able to communicate and are the best of friends. I have used some Signing Times in my classroom and my students sign along with Rachel and her crew. I have researched the curriculum and the teachers who are using it are very happy with the results they are getting. These items will be used for years to come and each year, a new group of signers will emerge from the second grade.

Not only is sign language a great way for students to learn a new language, but it has been proven to help in language arts.

I started signing with my students 2 months ago, and 90% of my students can now sign the alphabet and many of them can do it in 30 seconds or less. They use it to spell and to communicate...and they love it. I love being able to share this wonderful language with them and want to provide them with the best materials for it.
