I would like my students to be fully engaged with physics and one another through active learning. A major challenge is getting students to collaborate effectively in class. My favorite quote is "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."
I teach three levels of physics to about 120 students each year.
We offer Introductory Physics, AP Physics 1, and AP Physics C Mechanics. We are in the process of growing our physics program and expanding enrollment opportunities for students. This past year was our first year officially offering Physics C Mechanics for credit. My school is an urban public high school; it is located in mid-sized city. Approximately 1900 are enrolled in my school where more than half (approximately 54%) qualify for free or reduced lunch. The students that enroll in my classes are hard-working.
In my classroom I place a heavy emphasis on inquiry based laboratory experiences and having students work together to draw meaningful conclusions. It is becoming even more urgent to have resources that can aid students as they analyze and present their work. By obtaining this equipment, my students will be able to collaborate more efficiently during class time. During our lab time, students will be able to collaborate and record their discussions and ideas - making it easier to assess their knowledge. I'll be able to hold each student responsible for their contributions.
Donations will provide my students with more authentic and engaging experiences in science where we can have smaller groups.
They will truly learn and have the tools to actually collaborate like scientists. I'm sure that more in-depth learning will take place and students will gain a greater level of zeal for the subject area. Donations will result in increased student-learning and increased integration of technology.
