My students need Big Books and the manipulatives to go with them for hands on learning.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
There is a Chinese Proverb: I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand. This describes my students to a tee! My students have multiple physical and/or cognitive challenges. They are hands-on learners!
I work in a fabulous elementary school.
It houses general education classrooms K-6 as well as special education classrooms. We have students who are visually impaired, hearing impaired, physically impaired, cognitively impaired and typically developing all interacting with one another. We also have classrooms for younger children too. Our students do not feel different or excluded in this setting.
I provide speech therapy for the young children in our Early Childhood Developmentally Delayed and our Physical or Other Health Impairment Classrooms. These students are between 2 and 6 years old. Many stay in the same classroom for two to three years before moving to a new teacher. The kids enjoy when lessons revolve around a book. With books, I am able to teach new vocabulary, opposites, basic concepts and target answering questions. Because these kids demonstrate cognitive delays, they tend to have delayed language as well. The story kits that I have requested contain objects that can be handled by the children. The children can manipulate the objects and gain a better understanding of the story. The big book allows the children to see the book better and makes it easier for the children with physical limitations to point to the pictures. It is easier for these children to learn when they are able to be more interactive with the story.
Kids who are actively engaged in learning are going to pick-up on things and meet their goals quicker.
The bright colors and beautiful manipulatives included with these kits are sure to make learning fun. The supplies I receive will benefit over 25 kids immediately and many more over the years!
