They are super colorful and inspirational. They are constantly engaged in the reading corner because they want to see the vibrant pillows, hug the bear, and read the quotes. The pillows look like flowers, fruits, and a tree trunk. So, they stir imagination and nonfiction questions. Then, the quotes remind them of their value and importance. Plus, the images look like them. So, they feel valued. Finally, the bear is very comforting. He provides a chance to read to him and/or hold him. I have many students that have faced trauma. So, they can feel connected and calmed. Many of my students are lacking food at home, especially during the government shut down and lack of resources. So, it is exciting to be able to provide regular snacks for them. Now, they can focus on teaching and learning, rather than their hunger. I have four classes and have enough snacks that any of them can eat before lunch. Our lunch isn't until 12:55. So, they get extremely hungry and it is hard to concentrate. The books show them examples of leadership in Science, politics, dance, and activism. So, they are reading about important figures in history and learning they can reach these heights too. In fact, I've had two sets of friends tell me they read the books during their sleep over. In all my years teaching, I've never had students share they were reading during their visits with friends for the weekend. They let me know what chapter they were on and were eager to continue reading. It was really wonderful to see such joy about these new books.
