This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I'm switching gears from ELA to also teaching social science in a self-contained class this fall. I need some book sets with historical references that I can used for cross-curricular activities. Would love help getting some new sets. This will be my first time ever teaching social science.

My students are 7-12th grade at a continuation school.

I'm looking for low-high books to get them engaged and wanting to read while they are also learning about other cultures and people in the world. I'm hoping to use these as units for the school year to help me teach social science but doing it from the aspect of using stories/books to do so.

These books should be enough for each student in the class and all of them, combined, should last us throughout the school year. I am especially excited for The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind. I read the book and saw the movie and it is such a moving tale (and based on a true story).

My students are at-risk, foster youth and many are far behind in credits. I'm trying to do all I can to find high-interest materials to help encourage them to learn and the passion of a good book. I'm excited and nervous to teach a brand new subject but I know these books will help me with lesson planning and to get the school year off to a good start. My goals for these books are to read them for English Language Arts and to study where the story happened, when, what else is going on in that geographical location, etc. to tie it into social science. I also want us to include a diverse group of people around the world, to help the students learn about others and understand more acceptance of others.
