Talking Buttons Make Our Classroom Come to Life!

Help me give my students talking buttons and rechargeable batteries for additional ways to communicate along with picture symbols from TPT to develop their independent use of communication tools.

My Project

We are a school with students who are often attending school for the first time. I’m the small group Special Education Teacher for students with significant needs including 2 non-verbal students. It is their first time in school and brand-new students generally do not have communication devices. Students acquiring language benefit from pictures, gestures, modeling, and hearing words. It's critical these students are in an environment which is meaningful and functional for them to gain the most understanding. While my students have started recognizing and using picture symbols/photographs, the goal is for students to achieve a greater level of independence in their communication.

The Talking Buttons project can make our whole classroom come to life!

It is going beyond the functional use of words such as - bathroom, help, more, and all done to incorporating buttons for letters, numbers, sight words, colors, greetings, manners, etc. Creating a more interactive learning environment is especially exciting and critical for students with special needs.

Throughout the school day, students will have opportunities to use the talking buttons to communicate and practice concepts. They will be used during routines, instruction, and transitions.
