Help me give my students an understanding of how blockchain and cryptocurrency works by creating a classroom token economy in which students create a cryptocurrency which is used to buy filament, vinyl, and leather to manufacture products.
As a teacher serving in a low-income school district with a higher than average ratio of students with disabilities, it has become a necessity to find innovative ways to engage students in learning.
Our students lack the opportunities to engage in project-based, authentic learning that fosters independent thinking and creativity.
In addition, our economically disadvantaged and students with disabilities subgroups are consistently under performing their peers. Our goal is to increase their engagement in school and content and foster a deeper level of thinking in order to give them the skills to be successful when they graduate.
My Project
Financially literacy is a critical skill for all our students to develop. It is important to teach students how being financially literate has changed and will continue to change as technology evolves.
Blockchain and cryptocurrency are emerging technologies that are changing our world, and are therefore essential for students to know and understand to be competitive in the workforce.
Students will experience how blockchain and cryptocurrency work through the development of a token economy, where students will name a cryptocurrency, and then utilize that cryptocurrency in class to manufacture product. Students will be given some cryptocurrency to start. They will have to use that cryptocurrency to buy supplies to manufacture a product. For example, they might purchase filament to 3D print, they might purchase craft leather to make and manufacture jewelry, or they might purchase craft vinyl to design clothing. They can also purchase a combination of items, depending on their product idea. They can then sell their product to earn cryptocurrency. The project is designed to demonstrate how cryptocurrency works and its roll in the transfer of goods.
