For many of my special education students, having choices about where and how they work can make a huge difference in their ability to stay engaged and be successful.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite things about this project is seeing students actually choose the cozy corner when it is time to read. Students who may normally be reluctant to pick up a book are much more willing to settle in with a pillow and read when it feels less like an assignment and more like something they can enjoy. The space has also been especially helpful for students who become distracted or overwhelmed in a traditional classroom setting and benefit from a calmer environment. Years later, these materials continue to be used every single day by new groups of students. As a special education teacher, one of my biggest goals is to help students become stronger readers while also helping them discover that reading can actually be enjoyable. We have used these books to work on important reading skills such as vocabulary, comprehension, sequencing, character development, making predictions, identifying theme, and using evidence from the text. The illustrated editions have been especially valuable because the pictures provide additional support for students who struggle with comprehension and help bring the story to life. Reading in our classroom is very interactive—we read together, stop to discuss important events, make connections, ask questions, and complete activities that allow students to show their understanding in different ways.\r\n\r\nThree years later, these books are still being used and loved, which is probably the best way I can describe the success of this project. Some of my most reluctant readers have become the students who are most excited to continue to the next chapter. For students who have struggled with reading for years, being able to successfully read and understand a novel like *Harry Potter* gives them an incredible sense of accomplishment. The illustrations make the books feel more approachable, while the story keeps them engaged and wanting to know what happens next. It is wonderful to see students discussing characters, predicting events, laughing at parts of the story, and genuinely looking forward to reading. Overall, we believe the story's powerful themes offered a valuable opportunity for discussion.\r\n\r\nSet in Omaha, Nebraska, during the 1986–1987 school year, Eleanor & Park is a coming-of-age story about two 16-year-old misfits who fall in love on the school bus. Eleanor Douglas is the new girl in town. She has fiery red hair, wears unusual clothes, and is bullied for her appearance and weight. She comes from an impoverished and abusive home, which leaves her feeling isolated and ashamed. Park Sheridan is a quiet boy. His mom is Korean and his dad is American. They met during the Korean War. Park keeps to himself to avoid attention. He has a supportive family but still feels like an outsider. Over time, the two bond over shared interests in comic books and 1980s music. The romance they find gives them a sense of hope and belonging in a difficult world.\r\n\r\nThe novel is celebrated for its realistic and emotional depiction of adolescent life, which includes these sensitive topics: Domestic Abuse and Bullying.\r\n\r\nThis book offers a window into the challenging realities that many teens face. It presents a unique opportunity for families to discuss a range of important issues.\r\nSuch as: How do Eleanor and Park find strength despite their difficult circumstances?\r\nWhat does the story say about the impact of bullying? How does Eleanor's home life affect her self-worth and her relationship with Park? How does the book address themes of identity and belonging, especially through Park's experience as a biracial teen?\r\n\r\nWe encouraged students to talk with their parents about these topics as they read. In the past, cutting thick cardboard by hand was frustrating and very time-consuming. Often causing their big ideas to shrink in order to fit what they could physically cut. When I introduced the ChompSaw, their reactions said it all. They were amazed at how smoothly and safely it cut through the cardboard. The pieces were more precise, designs were more intentional, and students' engineering thinking really started to shine.\r\n\r\nWhat I didn't expect was how quickly their minds would jump to \"What else can we build with this?\" Students immediately began brainstorming ways to duplicate identical pieces for cardboard airplanes, strengthen frames for future Sphero challenges, and improve wearable micro:bit designs. I'm truly seeing STEM concepts spill over more naturally into our computer science work. The ChompSaw has removed a barrier and replaced it with confidence. It's made building easier and safer, which I truly appreciate. It has empowered students to take full ownership of their ideas from design to creation.
