This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Our school is situated in the city of Buffalo. The vast majority of our students are minorities and receive free or reduced lunch. Students work tirelessly throughout an extended academic school day, and many opt to remain after school for countless different extracurricular activities.
Our class is bursting with 6, 7, and 8 year old students who are curious, outgoing, and eager to try new things.
However, despite their zest for learning, they are often limited by a myriad of barriers that have been placed in front of them including, poverty, lack of early education, fragmented families, and overworked or absent parents, to name a few. These obstacles unjustly place these kids behind their peers. Thus, these students require ample resources to help them attain the same success as their more fortunate peers.
Two years ago, my second grade class had a full class set of iPads. Unfortunately, that changed midway through that school year when a pair of thieves robbed our school and stole all of our iPads from our first and second graders. The kids were devastated. The engaging, individualized, and cooperative learning apps we relied on heavily throughout the day were eliminated from the students' learning experience. We utilized our iPads to provide each student with systematic interventions, to minimize gaps in their learning. Without these interventions, the students' growth was stunted.
While the thieves were never brought to justice nor were our iPads returned, we are slowly finding money within our budget to purchase new iPads.
Last year the DonorsChoose community graciously funded 13 iPad cases and headphones for the devices that were purchased for our classroom. This year, we were able to purchase 5 new iPads but have not been able to use them as they lack cases and headphones. Thus, we are once again reaching out to the DonorsChoose community to support us in protecting these new devices so we can quickly put them in the hands of students. In the past, we would lose several iPads each year to cracked screens as we did not have the budget to repair them. Since putting the cases we received from DonorsChoose.org on the devices, not a single iPad has been cracked or damaged!
In addition to the iPad cases, I am again looking to supply the students with durable headphones to enable digital content to be read aloud to ensure that it is accessible to every student. By doing this, we can continue using our iPads to provide our students with the most individualized and appropriate education possible.
