For most of us adults, we remember math as a series of procedures and rules we had to memorize. For many of us, this led to anxiety and the inability to transfer these skills to real life situations. With the current generation of mathematicians, we are looking to revolutionize the way math is taught. Rather than memorizing math facts, we want students to be able to visualize what adding and subtracting looks like. We want our students to be flexible in their thinking, and to be able to see a word problem and not just "pick two numbers and add or subtract". Instead, students should be able to associate addition and subtraction with a firm understanding of what more and less looks like to transfer not just to word problems, but to real life scenarios. To do this, I am looking to provide my students with Rekenreks. A Rekenrek is an evidence based math tool that is used to support students' understanding of addition and subtraction as it allows students to slide beads to show more and less. These tools are particularly beneficial for my students, as many of them come to second grade behind the grade level norm. Thus, before we can push students into multi-digit addition and subtraction, we need these tools to help them solidify the basic concept of addition and subtraction. I am looking to provide students with individual Rekenreks to 20, as well as Rekenreks to 100, that will be used when we begin multi-digit addition and subtraction.
