My Project

My students are the reason that drives me to do many things in my 3rd grade classroom. My students are smart, kind, caring, and just want to be shown love. We are a small rural school located in West Virginia and most of my students come from low income households. Many come into my classroom having difficult home situations to deal with, they lack food/clothing, and some don’t have access to proper hygiene even.

Research shows that 3 in 5 students come to school without having their basic needs met and this is something I’m making a priority to help with.

Students struggling to have their basic needs met come to school facing increased stresses levels and a decrease in academic performance. By understanding the challenges our students face and putting small steps in place we can ensure that some of their basic needs are met and they can be fully present to focus on learning while in school. Academic success is directly related to having their basic needs met.

I plan to create a “Take What You Need” cart. This will be filled with personal hygiene items like shampoo and deodorant, snack foods, and self care items. My goal is to alleviate some of the stress that coming to school hungry, without shampoo to wash their hair, or having deodorant creates for them.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
