This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The students that I serve are tremendously impoverished; homeless to some degree more than I can have ever imagined. Yet they come to school which can sometimes be a cold place.
Many of my students are in shelters where they don't experience a restful night; some are sleeping on someone's floor or couch and often do not have the luxury to rest when needed; then there are those who sleep in their cars which is becoming a more acceptable living arrangement.
My Project
Often I have students who have just lost placement in a foster home, shelter or their natural home. When they come to school learning often adds more stress to their day. At our school we have a nurse 2 days per week then often times I have had to step in the role when needed.
For my students that have experienced a disruption in living arrangements, they come to school tired and hungry.
We have been able to address the hunger and clothing issues for our students but often they are required to attend class where they often fall asleep and sometimes get laughed at or scolded for doing so.
A recovery couch will allow the students to rest briefly to re-energize and continue on with their day. Maybe they are afraid to sleep in their new setting and that is understandable. I have often read about the benefits of power naps and just maybe this will be a successful piece of the puzzle to meet the needs of our students who experience homelessness.
