Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have changed positions from teaching 5th graders all subjects to teaching 1st through 5th science. I would like to have additional materials to pique their interest and reinforce my teaching. I want them to ask more questions through exploration and the exposure to new information

I teach at a lower socioeconomic school with the majority of students being English language learners.

They need exposure to subjects that are not in a 5 block radius. They are eager to learn and crave the experience. Since I can't bring them to the experience I would like to have books and DVD's for them to access this information. I will also be leading a guided reading group for lower grades that struggle with reading. I have ordered some magnetic letters for these children to make a connection with the sound and shape of the letter. I am sure my older students will find a use for them. We could use them for sounding out and spelling a complex word. Using the magnetic letters may also be an "I'm done activity".

My Project

I have ordered a wide variety of supplies. I have ordered expository books and magazines for exploration and fun. I want children to learn that reading information about something you like is fun. DVD's were ordered to front load new science topics. A double sided easel that has storage (no storage in my portable) and has rings for a flip chart. Basic supplies, like glue and stickers for rewards. I ordered ink cartridges so that I can print out pictures of the students engaged in various activities. I ordered magnetic leaders for the children I will be leading in guided reading. All of these supplies will allow these children to access the information they need while enjoying themselves during learning time.

This is my first year teaching science and I am very excited.

I plan on my excitement rubbing off on my students. These suppulies will help me to facilitate that goal. We have supplies for experiments but not added reinforcements for concepts. The supplies I have ordered will help me to achieve my goal.
