Tactile Learners to Build Math Mastery with Books and Manipulatives
Help me give my students picture books to better understand critical mathematical concepts as well as hands on tools to aid my tactile learners in grasping their first exposure to fractions
I have the pleasure to serve a diverse group of enthusiastic learners in the rural bedroom community of Oakley Ca. My students come to school excited and eager to take on every challenge third grade has to offer. They come from many backgrounds; some from hardworking middle income families, some from disadvantaged homes and others from immigrant families. Despite their backgrounds, their families want and deserve the most engaging learning environment I can provide.
In the brief time that I have been their teacher, I have learned that this group learns best when they can engage with their learning by using their hands.
Every class is different, but this one is filled with tactile learners. It is my hope to give them the tools they need to be the most successful third graders they can be.
My Project
My students will build their math understanding by reading and listening to math stories. These stories align with the required standards of third grade. They will introduce students to concepts in an engaging, safe and friendly way. Students will make connections between the stories and the concepts which will aid in their mastery.
My tactile students will gain great understanding of fractions through the use of fraction towers.
Third grade is the first time my students will encounter the mathematical concept of fractions. It is imperative that they have tools to best help them understand such a challenging mathematical concept.
